The following story was written by a student on the staff of The Jaguar Times as part of Hilliard Bradley High School’s Journalism Production course.
A year ago, I was the busiest I had ever been. I had baseball practice 6-7 times a week with my only “day off” on Saturday that included a heavy lift with my friend Chistan. I somehow managed my time well enough to still be able to hang out with my friends and keep my grades stellar. Although I had so many good things going for me, my mental and physical health was deteriorating. I was miserable.
A year later I still have baseball practice 6 times a week, but my Saturday lift disappeared, and I rarely hang out with my friends. My nights often revolve around my family and video games. My mental health is good and my body is a little less broken, but I’m bored out of my mind. To clarify, I don't think boredom is a bad thing. Hayley Lauve said, “boredom during COVID wasn’t a bad thing because it gave me the opportunity to develop new hobbies I wanted to do but didn’t get the chance to do”. Boredom sparks creativity, and I’ve written my best work while bored. I had to ask myself, “was my life better when I was busy or bored?”.
I wanted to get the student's perspective on this topic because everyone’s life has drastically changed over the last year. I asked 10 students three different questions:
Is your life more boring than it was a year ago?
Are you happier than you were a year ago?
Is being bored better than being busy?
After reviewing the graphs I came to agree with the census. I would rather be busy than bored.
Scott Caudill said, “I lost motivation to do stuff over the last year”. Staying inside affected many Americans during the pandemic.
According to www.today.com, during the pandemic “people were reporting their physical health was also declining”. It’s important to note that being too busy or too bored isn't optimal. You need to find a balance between the two. This year has been good practice for all of us because when we leave high school we’re going to need to be able to balance our time better. While we can’t control events like pandemics, we can control how we spend our time in the future.
