The following story was written by a student on the staff of The Jaguar Times as part of Hilliard Bradley High School’s Journalism Production course.
Do you want to take a class with a flexible work schedule? Have a creative outlet? Write and learn about what matters to you? Maybe even have some parties? (Fingers crossed COVID allows). Then Journalism and Broadcast is the place for you! To seal the deal and convince you to join us next school year, some Jaguar Times members shared why they joined Journalism and why they love it so much.
Eric Vah (12) is the Sports Editor this year for the Jaguar Times. When asked why he joined the team, he shared that “[he] joined because [he] want[s] to be able to do this kind of thing for a career in the future. It’s always been a really big passion of [his], both writing and broadcast.” He added that by doing both Journalism and Broadcast in one class, “you get the best of both worlds.” He explained that if you’re more interested in one than the other, “there’s people who join for writing, and people who join for broadcast… or even both! There are all different types of people.” Eric plans to attend The Ohio State University this fall and study Journalism and Broadcast. That could be you if you become a part of this class! Alejandra Ramirez (12) is a Staff Writer this year for the Jaguar Times. She said that “[she]
joined Journalism because [she] feel[s] like it allows [her] to be creative, especially in the broadcast area. [She] had some experience before, so [she] wanted to gain more experience in broadcast.” She even lovingly added that “it’s an enjoyable class!”. Alejandra joined as a senior, so don’t think it’s ever too late! Any grade is able to be a part of this class, and everyone is welcome!
Miss Braemer is the Jaguar Times Advisor, aka our fearless leader. She thinks that “students should join journalism because it is a class that allows kids to experiment with their writing and learn about how news is produced in broadcast.” When addressing being on camera, she explained that “[she] think[s] a lot of times students think about the anchor in broadcast, but don’t r
ealize all that is involved in pre-production to post-production.” This is so true! There is a whole lot more involved in creating a quality broadcast than just having a good anchor, although that is key. Many jobs, such as editing, are offered to students if they aren’t comfortable being on camera or just want to try something new. Journalism is about more than just learning how to write and produce, we’re also a family. Miss Braemer shared that “[she] think[s] of journalism as kind of a "home base" for a lot of kids where they can really be themselves and have a family at school where you know that you’re accepted.” She added that “the content is great, but you get to spend time with people who are like minded and get to know students who are all ages.” Journalism is a great class if you’re looking for a way to make friends and meet new people.
If you’re interested in joining the Jaguar Times next school year, and we hope you are, make sure to pick up an application outside Miss Braemer’s room (A232). These are due on March 26th, so get them in! We can’t wait to have another great year, and we hope you’ll be a part of it!
