It’s been super hard recently to find the motivation to do anything fun since everything is shut down due to the recent outbreak of the coronavirus. The most common activity for most people is staying inside and watching endless episodes of Netflix. However, it can be nice to go outside and get some fresh air after being cooped up inside for days on end! There are plenty of activities to do outside while still staying safe and healthy.

Taking long walks outside is one of the best ways to continue social distancing while still getting in some good exercise! When asked, Campbell Ferguson (11) said she has been “walking [her] dog at Prairie Oaks Park almost every day when it’s nice out”. If you have a family pet, this could be the perfect opportunity to bond with them and take them on a peaceful nature walk. It’ll not only help you, but also your pet! Jasmine Thongsavanh (11) also said that “when the weather is nice, [she and her family] like to go hiking at some nearby parks”. She also said she likes to “walk around [her] neighborhood to get some fresh air”. Even going on a stroll with your family could be a great way to spend a little time together and get some fresh air. It could even be a short walk down the street!

There are lots of other options besides going on walks to keep you active and outside! When asked, art teacher Mrs. Lattig said that she and her kids have “been jumping on the trampoline” and she said they like to “play popcorn or see who can jump the highest”. Mrs. Lattig also said that they “went outside one evening before bedtime and used the Skyview app on [her] phone to see what stars, constellations, and planets were visible”. This is a great idea and would definitely be super interesting! Going outside at night could be just as refreshing and maybe even more relaxing than going out during the day. You could lay down a blanket in your backyard and watch the stars!

Some other activities outdoors that may be fun could be drawing with sidewalk chalk, going on a bike ride, doing some yard work, watching the sunset, or even having a bonfire. Any opportunity you can get to go outside while still keeping your distance from others, you should take it.

It’s definitely not easy being on quarantine but the best way to have fun is spending some quality time with your family and staying active! It’s easy to fall into a routine of eating junk food and laying on the couch, so go outside and have some fun!
