The following story was written by a student on the staff of The Jaguar Times as part of Hilliard Bradley High School’s Journalism Production course.
2020 has been hard for a lot of people. The 2020 class didn’t get a proper finish to their senior year, and now the class of 2021 isn't getting the typical start. This year’s homecoming looks a little different. Bradley not only got the opportunity to have a socially distant movie night for homecoming, but it was held at Huntington Park stadium. Upperclassmen were scattered throughout the field and the underclassmen were filtered in the seats. Many people went, in groups 10 or less, to watch the famous movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off this past Sunday.
These students, including the homecoming king and queen and Addison Crace (12), were able to talk about their experiences with this new homecoming. Addison thought that “the movie night" was definitely "different but still good.” Since the movie night was only open to Hilliard Bradley students, Addison’s boyfriend, a student at Hilliard Darby, couldn’t go with her. “I’m bummed about not being able to go with him because it was supposed to be our last homecoming so we won’t be able to do that together.”
Aubrey Hyrmer (12) and Colton Blauser (12) were the senior class homecoming king and queen. Aubrey expressed that she, “didn’t expect to win at all. [she] was really shocked and excited to be crowned.” She and Colton, a Bradley couple, were ecstatic about winning as seniors together. Colton was unsure of this year’s homecoming because, “it isn’t fun like normal" although their opinions changed after the movie night. They both agree that after the movie, their view on this year’s homecoming became one with more positive thoughts. Aubrey thought, “it was actually a really good time with some friends., We got to hang out and just laugh while watching a movie.” Although this year was filled with difficult times, it seems that people were able to make the best of what they had.
Through all the hardships that 2020 has given people, we still figure out a way to flourish. This movie night was not expected, or even wanted by some, but it was a good way to rally the school and pick up spirits. A lot of thinking went into this function to help kids feel a part of something when they’re so desperately trying to stay connected. This amazing opportunity has given many kids hope for a regular school year to begin.
