Every year students in every grade hit a road black during the second semester. Assignments seem to be never ending and everyone’s motivation to finish the last few weeks of school is non existent. State tests, the SAT, end of quarter grades, and the approach of summer create disconnected students. So, how can Bradley students stay motivated during this time of year?

When discussing end of year struggles seniors seem to face the most issues. Their time in high school is coming to an end and college is about to begin. They are itching to be done with the class work that feels pointless. Online student Mitch Kinser (12) says, “I am struggling the most with getting ready for the state test,” when discussing why he was struggling the most with this he mentions, “I waited until my senior year to take government and regret it.” He is not alone as many students feel this way as the fourth quarter is about to begin.

Seniors are not alone as many juniors, like Grace Meister, also feel checked out towards the end of the year. Grace says, “I feel bombarded with all of the tests at the end of year.” Though the end of the year means that we’re almost finished, it often feels like teachers choose to assign the most class work when we don’t want it. Even though this is not true, when students “check out” every notification we get on canvas tends to stress many out.

Teachers can face this roadblock as well. They watch students struggle and separate from school. So how can they help? Science teacher, Mr. Crocker says, “I would say focus during class so you can enjoy your free time.” Many students struggle to complete assignments because they feel they aren’t important, but as he mentioned use that time in class so you can “decompress and recharge for the next day.” This is great advice, take time after school and focus on yourself.

The school year is long, but everything you learn will help you one day. Use the time you have and make the best of these last few moments. Be sure to get involved and finish strong!
