April is the month of the military child. This month is used to recognize children of the military affiliated and the challenges they face. From having parents overseas to moving around, military affiliated families get honored and supported in April.
During this month of the military child, Hilliard Bradley High school has received the purple star award. An award from the Ohio department of education which recognizes schools providing and supporting their military affiliated families. Bradley is one of 511 schools who have received this award since 2017.
Mrs. Ysseldyke, Bradley’s point of contact for military families, says “we had to show documentation for at least three to five years of supporting and recognizing the military” to receive the purple star award.
The struggles military affiliated children face are serious. Samuel Green(11) says one of the biggest struggles is, “[family] being gone in different countries or different states for a certain amount of time” Bailey Matson(11) agrees, saying “I only get to see him [military father] two or three times a year”
James Jarrell(12) and Ezra Fry(12) both are in the military national guard while being students here at Bradley. Both have had similar experiences, Jarrell says, “we go up once a month to the base for eight hours and workout” both agree it is fun and enjoyable.
Fry shares a cool story saying, “it was kind of emotional [when] one of the veterans sat me and James down, before we left, and said it was nice to see younger people doing stuff for our veterans because they don’t really see that now” really touching Ezra’s heart saying “and that was a little sad”
As the month of a military child ends, remember to never stop supporting military families and their children because Bradley’s support is not slowing down anytime soon.
